The United States Tennis Association (USTA) continues to redefine the viewing experience at the US Open, and this year, it took to the skies. For the first time, a tethered drone system played a role in live tournament coverage, delivering stunning aerial views that captured the energy of the event and the beauty of New York City like never before.

The ProximaVision Aerospace® AirReady™ tethered drone system was deployed to provide 4K ultra-high-definition footage from up to 400 feet above the grounds. Unlike traditional drones, AirReady™ can remain airborne for hours, even days, without interruption, thanks to its continuous power and data transmission through its fiber-optic tether.

“Getting all the permissions and permits here is no small feat given the airports, homeland security, and various departments of the NYPD, but we got them completed, and it’s been great,” said USTA’s Mnych. “It offers an angle that we’ve never had before from the southeast side of the venue, and production is happy with it. The pictures look really great near dusk as you see the sun coming down behind Manhattan — it’s a really nice shot of the cityscape.”

The AirReady™ system provided production teams with a new dynamic perspective that enhanced storytelling and visual impact. Positioned strategically near the southeast side of the venue, the drone captured breathtaking panoramas — from the vibrant courts to the Manhattan skyline glowing at sunset.
